Press Release: Bishop-Wisecarver Showcases Advances of Modern Manufacturing as Host of National Manufacturing Day 2019 Activities

High-Tech, Innovative, Problem – Solving Manufacturing Careers on Display Friday, October 4

Pittsburg, Calif. – September 24, 2019 – Bishop-Wisecarver, a trusted industrial automation company offering proven motion solutions that are expertly designed and delivered to perform, today announced it will host tours of their facility for students and community members during this year’s eighth annual National Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) event. More than 1300 people have visited the company during previous MFG Day events and activities for 2019 include on-the-floor plant tours, a career showcase with multiple employees and jobs represented, and a hands-on, motion-related engineering challenge.

Manufacturing Day, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and The Manufacturing Institute, is an annual, national event that seeks to inspire the next generation of manufacturers, and this year’s event aligns with the “Creators Wanted” campaign. MFG Day is held in communities across the country in an effort to highlight modern manufacturing-a vibrant and growing industry that offers diverse, meaningful, high-paying career opportunities. More than 267,000 students and nearly 600,000 overall participants have joined in MFG Day events in the past seven years. Of those, 84 percent said the event convinced them that manufacturing careers were interesting and rewarding and 64 percent said they were more motivated to pursue careers in manufacturing.

“Manufacturing Day, and events like it, change the misconceptions around manufacturing and allow students and community members to see the industry for what it is - a cutting-edge, technology driven field that uses problem-solving to create products that change lives,” said Pamela Kan, President of Bishop-Wisecarver. “We have had the privilege of hosting MFG Day every year and each time, we see more and more students come in with one mindset and leave with a different understanding of the field and a vision for what a career in manufacturing could mean for them.”

Attendees this year include more than 200 local students from elementary to high school, community groups such as Girl Scouts and East Bay National Society of Black Engineers, educators and community members. This year’s event will also include a visit from Lenny Mendonca, Chief Economic and Business Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz).

Several regional companies have joined Bishop-Wisecaver as sponsors for the 2019 event, including: Cooper, White & Cooper LLP; Heffernan Insurance Brokers; Ramar Foods; SalesMuscle, Sensiba San Filippo; and MUFG Union Bank of Walnut Creek.

According to the below key statistics from the National Association of Manufacturers for California, the manufacturing industry and future jobs in the field are essential for the health of the state. Events like MFG Day help to encourage growth in the industry and inform students of the benefits provided by a manufacturing career.

  • Manufacturers in California account for 10.93 percent of the total output in the state, equaling $ 300.35 billion in 2017
  • California manufacturers employ 7.7 percent of the workforce, providing 1,325,000 jobs
  • Annual compensation for manufacturing workers was $105,240 in 2017
  • Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed, and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due to the skills gap

About Manufacturing Day
